Amrita Vidyalayam, Durgapur – ‘Providing Futures Beyond Education’

To educate is to inspire – inspire thought and wonder about the world around us. Education is a responsibility that goes beyond putting numerous historical dates and scientific facts into the child’s mind. Meek acceptance of facts, unquestioned assimilation of concepts, or the mechanical re-presentation of facts from memory – if such shallowness was meant, education would hardly have taken the world to where it is now.

Amma’s Math in West Bengal set up its first Amrita Vidyalayam at Bidhan Nagar, Durgapur in a sprawling five acres campus in June, 2003. Five more acres were later acquired in the same area for setting up a graduate college.

Within 4 years of its birth, the Amrita Vidyalayam (CBSE affiliation) school acquired a strength of 1100 students. The Math runs 56 such excellent schools all over the country. This network of school impart modern education while instilling value based concepts and respect for our tradition and culture, at very reasonable fees. The Math also runs a free school for the poor children of the housing colony constructed at Amrabati, Durgapur.

Note: The first batch of Xth Standard students will be appearing for their CBSE Board Exams in March 2010. The CBSE has also given NOC for Durgapur’s Amrita Vidyalayam to start Class XI and XII from April 2010. The building for the post secondary education has been completed. It will be inaugurated during Amma’s forthcoming visit to Durgapur on March 18th, 2010.
